What's going on over on Alderfer Road in the Township Open Space?
New Basins to Improve Water Flow and Decrease Sediment Flow into our Waterways
The Park Avenue and Alderfer Road Basin Projects include retrofitting two existing stormwater facilities to provide water quality benefits by reducing sediment and nutrients to the adjacent West Branch of the Skippack Creek. The project will allow stormwater runoff to be retained within the existing basins for a longer period of time, which will allow the sediments to filter out. It also allows for the reduction in the amount of nutrients that enter the stream by infiltration and plant uptake, prior to discharging the runoffs to the stream.
The concrete low-flow channel within the Park Avenue basin will be removed and the bottom of the basin will be regraded to provide a flatter area to allow ponding of smaller, more-frequent rain events prior to its discharge to the stream. An energy dissipator will be provided at the discharge pipe into the basin to slow the velocity of the runoff.
The Alderfer Road stormwater facilities consist of 2 smaller basins. The retrofit project will include creating a larger ponding area for both existing basins and to provide outlet structures to control the outflow from smaller rain events, The area is to be planted with native meadow grasses, flowers and plants to create a natural landscape and to provide evapotranspiration and infiltration.
